Apprentice in Death by J. D. Robb

Commonwealth by Ann Patchett

Downfall by J. A. Jance

Pirate by Clive Cussler

Captain America: the Civil War

Central Intelligence

The Huntsman: Winter’s War

Response to our Summer Reading Program this year was amazing. 220 children FINISHED the program and received tickets from local sponsors:  McDonald’s, Strasburg Railroad, Lancaster Barnstormers, The Country Barn, Lancaster Ice Rink, Castle Roller Skating, That Bounce Place, Isaac’s Sandwiches, Auntie Anne’s, Dutch Wonderland, Rita’s Ice, the Comic Store, Laser Dome, SkyZone Trampoline Park, and Refreshing Mountain Ziplines.  A sincere “thank you” to all of these businesses for supporting the county-wide Summer Reading Program.

Reading over the summer is a big factor in avoiding the “summer slide” which happens when school is not in session.  Children return to school with their brain at its best not only by reading and learning new things, but also from the educational programming provided over the summer – much of it from our local community:

  • Miss Maggie Sings (AKA Peggy Gernerd)
  • Jesse Rothacker and Forgotten Friends Reptiles
  • Fred Nell and narcotics search dog “Sadie”
  • Al Means and search and rescue bloodhounds “Heather” and “Chip”
  • Ryan Bridge, the “Bug Man”
  • Juggler Chris Ivey
  • Country Conjuring with Erick Hershey magic show
  • Joseph Children’s Health and “Hank” the Health Hero
  • Columbia Borough Fire Department
  • Officer Troy Engle, Columbia Boro Police
  • Columbia Q.R.S. team – Tyler Seibert, Austin Peters, Nathan Kramer, Jared Poole
  • Sallie Gregory of Lancaster County Conservation District
  • Steven Courtney
  • Matthew Dodd
  • Kirsten Kelsey of the North Museum of Nature and Science
  • Sue Wickenheiser and Steve Ness of Boy Scout Troop 35
  • Katie Knaub of the Watch and Clock Museum
  • Fred McNaughton
  • Author Toni Albert
  • Tina Mark of Shuts Environmental Center
  • Sarah of Rock Ford Plantation
  • Brightstar Children’s Theater
  • Jeo and John, our “Junkyard Drummers”
  • Kelly Skiptunas and Reading Education Assistance Dog “Spencer”
  • And I would like to also extend a thank you to Mrs. Renee Christiansen, Youth Services Manager for the county-wide library system. Renee does everything from scheduling many of our programs, providing funding for some of the presenters, and arranging the ticket sponsors/providing tickets.  Thank you, Renee – your help to me is a Godsend!

Thank you to each and every one of these wonderful folks – they are true “heroes” in many ways.  Over 1800 people attended our summer programs this year!  Quite a few of our presenters and performers will be returning again next year.

With the kids returning to school, what a great time for all of us to learn something new!  Why not “Learn to Crochet with Mitzi Sanchez”?   Crocheting is really not as difficult as it looks once you get the hang of it.  And Mitzi is a fantastic teacher…..very patient and hands-on.  For ages 9 and up – and guys are welcome too!!  Crocheting is a great way to keep your hands busy and relieve stress.  The class is now meeting TWICE a month:  Tuesday, September 13, at 6 PM and Tuesday, September 27, at 6 PM.  This allows beginners to sharpen their skills and we are also starting Christmas projects of winter wear items for our community Mitten Trees.  If you have yarn, bring it along.  Mitzi will advise you as to the best size crochet hook to get you started.  Experienced crocheters, please join us and bring your current project.

AND, if you prefer knitting, Cortni O’Hara is starting a “Knit and Chat” group one Saturday afternoon per month.  Then first session is Saturday, September 17, from 1 PM to 3:45.  Drop in at any time during this period!  Experienced knitters, bring your current project.  Those new to knitting should just bring themselves – Cortni will explain to you exactly what you need to purchase or borrow from a friend.

The Susquehanna Foundation will hold a College Planning Workshop on Monday, September 19, from 6 to 8 PM, in our Conference Room.  For more information on the Susquehanna Foundation, please visit http://susquehannafoundation.com/index.html
