Summer Reading program is drawing to an end, but we still have programs through August 15! The last day to turn in your reading logs and pick up your tickets is Saturday, August 12. We’ve had over 350 sign up for Summer Reading logs this year and it is always fun to see how many complete their reading challenge.

The first day of August brings the Summer Reading program from Lancaster County Parks Service: “The Lorax” with Mary Ann Schlegel. I read the Lorax every year at Sahd’s Earth Day and have seen the animated feature, but this program takes it a step further. Together we will hang thneeds in a Truffula Tree and talk about what we can do to stop pollution. Each participant will create their own Lorax or Onceler paper bag puppet. Tuesday, August 1, at 10 AM. Park School – all ages.

The fun continues on that same Tuesday evening as National Night Out happens at Glatfelter Field from 6 to 9 PM. All of our heroes come together – one night only! See fire trucks, ambulances, and emergency vehicles. There will be face painting, bounce house, emergency response team activities and the library will have its annual Scavenger Hunt. Treats from Turkey Hill and Herr’s snacks. See if you can help bail Sam and Lisa out of jail! New this year: fireworks! This event will be held at Glatfelter Field (next to Anvil Corporation.) Tues., August 1 from 6 to 9 PM Due to staff participation in this event, the Columbia Public Library will be CLOSED from 5 to 8 PM on August 1! (Family) Sponsored by Columbia Borough Police Department

Al Means and his bloodhounds Heather, Reuben, and Chip return on Monday August 7. It is always amazing to see these dogs in action. Red Rose K-9 Search and Rescue Bloodhounds have located many missing people and also have assisted the police in finding fugitives. Al and Patti Means provide this service completely as volunteers – for more information, visit http://www.redrosek9.com/ Monday, August 7, at 10 AM – Park School, all ages.

Our Community Program on Monday, August 7 will be led by Samuel Edmond. “Columbia: Do You Remember When?” is designed for people who grew up in our little town. Sam will share some of his memories from childhood til today and then open it for audience reminiscences. If time allows, Sam will share some Columbia videos. Monday, August 7, at 6 PM in our Conference Room.

Our own Columbia QRS team will visit Tuesday, August 8. Find out what emergency medical technicians and paramedics do (and find out what is the difference!) Check out equipment in the QRS vehicles and learn the RIGHT way to call 911 (a skill everyone should know). Photos ops too! For all ages. Tuesday, August 8, at 10 AM – Park School (inside and play area)

Many folks in Columbia know Fred Nell, who is a Columbia School District alumnus. Fred’s dog, Sadie, has special abilities: she can track all kinds of substances (even dangerous explosives). Sadie has been used by businesses for drug testing employees; she also does school locker searches. Fred works with various social service agencies so that those with substance abuse problems can get the help they need. And when Sadie isn’t working, she LOVES to run and play. Come hear Fred’s inspiring advice about the importance of education and doing your best in school. And don’t forget your sneakers – we’ll be running with Sadie and she WILL wear you out! This is a great program for animal lovers and those who have high energy levels! Monday, August 14, at 10 AM – Park School gym. (May possibly be held in the gazebo and in Locust Street Park if the gym floor is being waxed.) All ages.

Our 2017summer season comes to an end with the Columbia Borough Police Department. This year, their program focuses on the dangers of substance abuse, so it is perfect timing in following the Sadie program. We also will learn safety tips, have a chance to see police equipment, and of course, sit in the cruisers. This important program is for all ages. It may possibly be held in the gazebo and Locust Street Park, due to the gym floor being waxed. Call 684-2255 for more details. Tuesday, August 15, at 10 AM. All ages.

The Young Adult book club holds it second Gazebo meeting on Wednesday, August 16, at 1 PM. We will be discussing Carolyn Mackler’s “The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things.” With the help of caring friends and a kickboxing class, Virginia Shreves learns to accept both her body image and the behavior of her dysfunctional family. Ages 12 and up. Wednesday, August 16, at 1 PM – park gazebo.

Our Reading Education Assistance Dog Spencer’s next public visit will be Thursday, August 17, at 1 PM. Please call 684-2255 or email lgreybill@columbia.lib.pa.us to reserve a 15 minute time slot to read to the dog. Ages 5 and older.

The Susquehanna Foundation will present a free College Financial Planning workshop on Thursday, August 17, from 6 to 8 PM. If you or a family member are heading off to college (or seriously thinking about returning and getting your degree) you don’t want to miss this free workshop.

Our Family Movie night for August is Wednesday, August 23, at 6 PM. Celebrate the beginning of school with Smurfs: the Lost Village. Non-messy snacks and drinks with a lid are welcome.
