Our summer reading program has been a huge success thus far. 390 children and teens have signed up to participate, with 115 program sheets already completed! Our June programs entertained 446 people and July programs have had an attendance of 729. Programs are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, AND Thursdays during August at 10 AM. Our next to last program, on August 18, will be a 6 PM gazebo concert with Steven Courtney. QRS 8 rounds out the summer at 10 AM on Thursday, August 19.
The last day to hand in your summer reading record sheets is FRIDAY, AUGUST 12. All prize tickets MUST be returned to the county library system on the first day of school, August 22. If you are traveling on vacation, you may want to turn in your sheets before you leave.
August programs are as follows:
Chris Ivey – more than just juggling! Chris is an experienced entertainer who has performed at the American Musical Theater, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, and other well-know venues. Chris’ shows involve juggling, costuming, theatrics, and special effects to provide excitement for both young and old. For all ages. Monday, August 1, at 10 AM
The Columbia Borough Police Department visits on Tuesday, August 2, at 10 AM. It’s important for children to realize the police are their friends! In addition to safety tips and what to do in an emergency, officers will show their equipment and offer a chance to sit in the patrol cars. Time permitting, you might even have a chance to try on handcuffs or a ballistic vest! For all ages. Tuesday, August 2, at 10 AM
The fun continues on that same Tuesday evening as National Night Out happens at Glatfelter Field from 5 to 8 PM. All of our heroes come together – one night only! See fire trucks, ambulances, and emergency vehicles. There will be face painting, bounce house, emergency response team activities and the library will have its annual Scavenger Hunt. Treats from Turkey Hill and Herr’s snacks. This event will be held at Glatfelter Field (next to Anvil Corporation.) Tues., August 2 from 5 to 8:00 pm (Family) Sponsored by Columbia Borough Police Department
Our Young Adult Book Club will meet Wednesday, August 3, at 1:30 PM and will be discussing John Green’s “Looking for Alaska”.
Pack 35 Boy Scouts – “The Summer Olympics.” Local scouts and leaders from Pack 35 will explore the summer games.

Monday, August 8, brings Sallie Gregory from the Lancaster County Conservation District for a Backbone Bonanza. Could you imagine not having a backbone? Find out why a spinal column is important not only to us but to many creatures in the natural world. For ages 4 to 12. Monday, August 8, at 10 AM
The North Museum of Nature and Science invites us to “Let’s Get Physical” on Tuesday, August 9. Come find out how STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) all relate to our human body. Examine a heart pump model, discover new wearable technology, find out how the human ear provided the basis for the telephone, and calculate the calories in your favorite snacks. Ages 5 through 13. Tuesday, August 9, at 10 AM.
Wonderful Wednesdays Family Fun Night! For ages 5 to 17 – under 12 must be accompanied by a caregiver. Join us for “Tie Dye Night”! Bring a shirt, socks, pillowcase, etc to tie dye. We will provide the dye and the fun! Limit of one item per person. Please wear old clothes. Event will run from 6 PM to 7:30 PM or until supplies run out. No registration is required for this event. The National Watch and Clock Museum, will present a program on Thursday, August 11: “Learn to Tell Time With the Grouchy Ladybug”. Join Katie Knaub from the National Watch and Clock Museum for a special story time rendition of Eric Carle’s The Grouchy Ladybug and make your very own ladybug paper clock to practice telling time. “Let’s Dance” with Matthew Dodd on Monday, August 15, at 10 AM in the gazebo! Matt invites us to “get up and dance with me” while he accompanies on guitar and banjo. This one is guaranteed to give the kids their exercise (and tire them out at the same time!) Monday, August 15, at 10 AM.
Our friends from Columbia Borough Fire Department join us on Tuesday, August 16, at 10 AM. Firefighters will read stories, demonstrate stop-drop-and-roll, review fire prevention tips and safety procedures to follow if there should be a fire, and point out all the items on the fire truck. And, oh yes, Sparky will be there too. Each child receives a helmet and take-home packet. Tuesday, August 16, at 10 AM
Originally scheduled for August 22, but moved due to school starting, Steven Courtney presents a concert in the gazebo on Wednesday, August 17, at 6 PM. That’s right, 6 PM….we hope many families can join us at that time!
Columbia Q.R.S. 8 Learn from the Q.R.S. team about the Quick Response Service that provides pre-hospital service to Columbia residents and serves a very important role in local accident scenes. You may even have a chance to try on some gear! IMPORTANT: sometimes this program is rescheduled at the last minute due to call-outs. We appreciate your understanding. Our Community Program for August features Mr. Jeff Helm and the discussion of a new program here in Columbia called “Neighborhoods”. It is designed to foster improved conversation between residents and borough officials. Each neighborhood would choose a spokesperson to share concerns with – then these concerns would be presented to the borough via formal or informal meetings. This will allow the borough to focus on specific needs of those in the community and agencies that can provide the necessary support. Join us on Monday, August 1, at 6 PM.
Read Aloud to Spencer sessions continue in August, but we do ask that you call and set up a specific time for your child to read to Spencer. This way, the child feels more comfortable sharing with the dog and adults can better plan other activities at this busy time of the year. Children ages 5 and up are welcome. Wednesday, August 24 is our Family Film Night. Since “Finding Dory” is now in theaters, we will be showing her predecessor, “Finding Nemo”, on Wednesday, August 24, at 6 PM. Non-messy snacks and drinks with a lid are welcome.
Crocheting with Mitzi will be held this month on Tuesday, August 9 and Tuesday, August 23 at 6 PM.
