A new presenter for the Columbia Public Library community programs (but certainly not new to me!) is Dr. Robert Frick. A retired educator/school superintendent, he now shares historical presentations to keep “education alive and well – and always with a smile”. Dr. Frick will be sharing a presentation featuring Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith. Columbia has a long history of abolitionism, and these two Lancaster abolitionists had considerable influence here in Columbia. If you are interested in Columbia’s history and would like to learn from a really great
teacher, this program is for you. I personally know that Dr. Frick is a super teacher because he was my elementary school, principal. “Thaddeus Stevens” and “Lydia Hamilton Smith” with be presented on Monday, October 2, at 6 PM. Light refreshments will be served.

The Young Adult book club has chosen their titles for the upcoming months. Middle schoolers will be reading The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May, and June for their first selection in October. Three sisters recover special powers from their childhood. April can see the future, May can literally disappear, and June can read minds. These abilities help them navigate the difficulties of high school, but the sisters soon find out they may be able to use

April can see the future, May can literally disappear, and June can read minds. These abilities help them navigate the difficulties of high school, but the sisters soon find out they may be able to use
these gifts for a far better purpose.  The high school book club chose a darker title for October: This Is Where It Ends.

This story unfolds over one horrific morning when a young man with a gun enters an auditorium filled with high school students. Told through the viewpoints of many students (some locked in the auditorium, some are not), everyone tries to a. Survive and b. Figure out what went so horribly wrong and if there was any way of preventing
it. This novel is designed for older students and is definitely not a read to relax by.
Young Adult book clubs will meet on Wednesday, October 25, at 1:55 (middle school) and 2:45 (high school). See Mr. White, high school librarian, for more details.
We are happy to announce that Biggie, our Reading Therapy Cat, and his handler, Steph Weisser, will again be visiting one Wednesday each month this school year. Spencer, our Reading Education Assistance Dog, also has several school class visits scheduled for October – but he and his handler, Kelly, are looking for a monthly time when they can do a READ session for the general public. If you have children ages 5 and older who would like to read aloud to a loveable dog, please let us know your availability – days of the week, time of day, etc. Call 717-684-2255 or email lgreybill@columbia.lib.pa.us. Collecting these
responses will allow us to best determine the times and dates for Spencer’s monthly public visits. We need your help to develop this schedule! Please call 717-684-2255 if you have any questions.
